Hans von Manteuffel - Photographer

Hans von Manteuffel, an excellent photographer, was born on January 23, 1962 in Walsrode, Germany. The photographer's career milestones are Olinda, São Paulo and Recife. In 2007, he acquired Brazilian citizenship. Since then, he has been living in Recife, the capital of Pernambuco. His professional career is based on a sophisticated photographic approach to composition. He aims to capture images of the natural and cultural landscape. The human being is at the center and in dialogue with the place.
He worked as a freelance photographer from 1991 to 1997. He covered events for the ‘Fundação de Cultura da Cidade de Recife’, ‘EMPETUR Empresa de Turismo de Pernambuco’ and companies such as ‘Coca-Cola’. He spent a year traveling for the tennis magazine ‘Match Point’ in São Paulo.
From 1998 to 2002, he worked as a photojournalist for the Jornal do Commercio de Recife. From January 2004 to October 2015, he was a photographer and correspondent for the national newspaper O Globo in Rio de Janeiro.
Manteuffel reported as a photojournalist for the PCR Culture Foundation on events such as the international dance and theater festival. He worked for the multicultural magazine Continente, published by CEPE. He wrote articles for magazines such as ‘Movimento Médico’ and ‘Viagem e Turismo’ from the Abril publishing house.
He was responsible for images in several advertising campaigns through the advertising agencies Ampla, Gruponove and Level Comunicação. These were for EMPETUR Empresa de Turismo de Pernambuco, the Recife City Council and the Recife Congress Center.
Hans von Manteuffel was invited to design the books of the visual artists Abelardo Germano da Hora and José Corbiniano Lins and the painter Tereza Costa Rêgo.
In 2007, he illustrated the important cultural celebrations for the 100th anniversary of Frevo in Recife/Olinda and the 30th anniversary of Olinda being declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
In 2022/23 Manteuffel submitted pictures to the international photo contest ‘Wiki Loves Monuments’. The photo he created, ‘Basílica da Penha, Recife/PE’, was selected as the second best picture of 2022.
In 2023 he took third place with the picture ‘Igreja e Praça da Sé, Olinda/PE’. Selected from 1,357 images submitted from 146 cities and 19 Brazilian states.
Founded in 1540, the Sé de Olinda Cathedral is the largest 16th-century cathedral in Brazil and the oldest in Olinda.
In 2024, Manteuffel was one of three winners of the UN's global photo competition. The theme was urban transformation. The competition included 757 photographs from 53 countries. They showed the beauty and challenges of urban change. His picture "The rooftop garden that feeds the community" was exhibited at #COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
He is currently working on several cultural projects as a freelance photographer. He creates personalised, framed and canvas-printed images that he distributes. He currently has over 11,000 followers on Instagram @hans_fotos.
